Abstract
The growing concern about the supply of agricultural produce in the urban centres has led the nation into a new search for urban and peri-urban agriculture. Though the ‘agriculture garden’ concept was launched and formal practice of urban farming has begun in Bhutan, there are no formal studies conducted on the perspective, prospects, and challenges of urban and peri-urban agriculture. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of urban and peri-urban agriculture in the capital city of Bhutan. This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study and recruited 312 (response rate 81.4%) participants. A Mixed methods approach was adopted; qualitative data was obtained from residents and quantitative data were obtained from important stakeholders through focus group discussions to complement the results and discussions. The key findings showed that people look at urban agriculture positively and feel that it can help them increase productivity, maintain self-sufficiency and cut down the imports of agricultural products. The issue of proper space for farming needs to be addressed to make urban farming more vibrant. The government could encourage farming through small-scale entrepreneurial ventures.
